Launch where it is calm
Walk ten minutes to the slipway on the harbour side — not the open beach. The water there is flat on most days, and you can paddle the edge of the moorings for an hour without meeting a wave. Boards hire by the hour from the hut in season; outside summer, borrow ours from the garage.
Tides matter more than weather
Go within two hours either side of high water, when the current is laziest and the mud stays covered. The house folder has the week's tide table circled. Beginners should stay inside the moorings; confident paddlers can round the point to the beach on a settled day.
